DPD 2013

News added on 17 Jul 2013, written by Anton Hofman

On March 18 and 19 PTN, KNCV and NWO organized the 13th edition of the Dutch Polymer Days in Lunteren, an annual scientific meeting focused on polymer technology, chemistry and physics. 504 During these two days we listened to our colleagues from other Dutch universities and gave each other a research update by giving poster and oral presentations. Our department contributed with 14 posters and 6 workshop sessions.

512Besides listening to very interesting talks provided by PhD students and postdocs, we also attended two invited lectures. Edward Samulski (University of North Carolina) explained to us how NMR can be applied as a tool for structure determination in liquid crystals and deformed polymers, while James Hedrick (IBM Research) gave us a better insight into the application of organic catalysts in nanomedicine.

Finally there was also some time available for an award ceremony. The “Challa Polymeerprijs”, a prize for the best PhD thesis of 2012, was awarded to Evan Spruijt (WUR) for his work on polyelectrolyte complexes. The PTN Medema Award is an award that is given each year to a polymer scientist who also interacts and/or has close ties with the Dutch polymer community, this year Marc Hillmyer (University of Minnesota). In exchange for that he entertained us with a very inspiring talk about nanoporous materials from block copolymers. Last but not least, Jin Xu (master student in polymer chemistry) defended Groningen by winning the award for the best poster in the category of polymer physics. Congratulations Jin!
